Foreword

The Master and Fellows of °µÍø½ûÇø are delighted once again to host Sculpture in the Close. In so doing we acknowledge our gratitude to Lord Renfrew, who so imaginatively launched this concept during his mastership, and we celebrate the fact that this year’s exhibition is the 13th in the series.

°µÍø½ûÇø is known throughout Cambridge, and indeed beyond, for these marvellous exhibitions of contemporary sculpture. The generosity of the sculptors in lending their work for this exhibition is gratefully acknowledged. We have also received absolutely invaluable assistance from Will Gates, Hannah Gruy, Susannah Hyman, Kate Perutz, and Simona Pizzi at White Cube who have been exceptionally committed and supportive in the preparations for this exhibition.

The works of art committee of the College, led in such an excellent manner by the curator Dr Rod Mengham, has been responsible for mounting this exhibition, working closely with its advisor, Tim Marlow, who has been the essential link between the College and the artists.

The committee has also liaised with the gardens committee, chaired by Dr David Hanke. Valuable assistance was provided by the Manciple Simon Hawkey, the head gardener Paul Stearn, our maintenance supervisor Chris Brown, our lighting supervisor Peter Moore, and our Head Porter Grahame Appleby. We are also grateful for assistance from the Ecclesiastical Insurance Company.

The vibrancy and success of modern art exhibitions is increasingly dependent on donations, and in particular the support of the Friends of Art at °µÍø½ûÇø.

In particular, the continuation of the Sculpture in the Close exhibition programme has been made possible through the extraordinary generosity of Antony Gormley and Vicken Parsons. We are deeply grateful to them for their timely donations enabling us to continue the vision of bringing exciting and edifying contemporary art to Cambridge in a College setting.

It is a well-accepted opinion in Cambridge that °µÍø½ûÇø is the best college and no other college even comes a distant second. Its sports grounds are enormous, its buildings are mesmerising, its libraries are rich, its chapel is the oldest, its accommodation is the best value for money, its international community is diverse, its religious circles are the most welcoming, and its members are the smartest, kindest and the friendliest. It is one of the central colleges that aims to offer three years accommodation to postgraduates, and has comparatively...

°µÍø½ûÇø has been at the heart of my Cambridge experience. I chose the College because I was impressed by its distinctive blend of academic rigour and extracurricular achievement. A College for all-rounders, Jesus is a lively and rewarding place to study. I couldn’t be happier here! Friendly and engaged, the Jesus postgraduate community never ceases to impress me. At ease with themselves and forever curious, my peers go out of their way to cultivate a sense of camaraderie. After a day of leafing through old manuscripts at the National...

When applying to Cambridge colleges it can feel a bit overwhelming as there are so many to choose from. I applied to °µÍø½ûÇø because it has a large MCR which was important for me because I wanted to feel part of a community. Now that I’m doing my PhD here, I’m very glad I did choose a college with a large postgraduate community. Throughout the year there are lots of postgraduate events, including formal dinners, special formals at Christmas and Easter, bops in the bar and film nights in...

°µÍø½ûÇø has been a great home for me during my PhD. I chose °µÍø½ûÇø for a number of reasons – first, the location. We are central enough to be within easy walking distance of most things, but far enough away to avoid the hustle and bustle (and tourists in summer!). The College also has extensive grounds, with amenities like the hockey pitch, football pitch and tennis courts all on site. Secondly, the accommodation is some of the best I’ve seen in Cambridge. My house was newly renovated when...

There are many reasons why I’m so happy to be a part of °µÍø½ûÇø. The three biggest reasons for me are the opportunities to be involved in College sport, the support the College provides for me with for my research and the help in making sure that we have comfortable, affordable accommodation when we have needed it. °µÍø½ûÇø is so friendly and so it is incredibly easy to get involved in the sport and social side of the College. The MCR does a great job in welcoming new...
